Some people believe that the Ming Dynasty prospered the most when Emperor HongWu was ruling. This was due to the fact that he graciously distributed land to the people of no money. Other farmers and landlords, ones who could afford their own land, did not like this idea. Eventually, in 1393 the poor farmers were ecstatic because they got land of their own to cultivate. Due to the enormous number of farmers who now had land to use, they had the largest amount of cultivated land in any of the dynasties.
The Ming's also developed their own irrigation system in order to keep their crops alive. Since Emperor HongWu had come from a poor family, he knew how these farmers felt. So, he decided to make the sub-officials, the people in charge of the taxes, do right by all the farmers they had wronged.
